Solo Questions and answers (Week 1 - 2)

Explain causes of Stupp: Stupp is a combination of human muck wrapped up in tissue. The reason people make stupp is because many people don't have toilets and running water. So when they have to go, they do it wherever they can. They do it on a piece of toilet paper and wrap it up once they're done. They chuck it rubbish bags and the bags come together. All over the city, trash bags get loaded onto carts, and from carts onto trucks or even trains, and the train and trucks dump them in Behala.

Analyze the items in Raphael's treasure box: The treasure box, which was a crate that beer came in contains many items including his little spread of treasures. His treasures included a penknife with a broken blade, A picture of the Virgin Mary, A still watch, a little plastic duck and a pair of jeans wrapping the precious bag.

Predict who the girl in the photo in Jose Angelico's wallet was: I think the mysterious girl could be Jose's daughter who he lost when he left Philippines (where the story is based) for work.

Imagine what kind of person rat could be: I think rat is a dodgy but helpful character in the story. I think he could help Raphael and Gardo decide what to do with the wallet. But, he could be a violent and angry person.

Imagine how Behala looks like: I think Behala is a humble town sitting awkwardly next to the city. I can imagine a huge rubbish mountain that covers the horizon if looked at from below. I can imagine little cardboard huts made of recycled materials like paper and sheets of metal with random things used resourcefully.

  1. These are very detailed and thought provoking questions. They require you to think about the book from Raphael's perspective and think deeper into the story.
