Vocabulary Enricher - week 6

Vocabulary Enricher

Learning Intention:
Define complex and unfamiliar words, identify synonyms and use words in a context.
Success Criteria:
  • Write a definition of each word.
  • Include synonyms for each word.
  • Write sentences that include each word.
Big:
Definition: Something that is large in size.
Synonyms: Large, great, huge, giant, massive.
Sentence: The elephant is the biggest land animal.
Why: I chose the word big because the word sums up a lot of what is included in this group of chapters. Because they travel to Zapanta's land where his big house is, big lawn, and the man who owns the place is also very big.

Brave:
Definition: Ready to face danger or pain:
Synonyms: Bold, courageous, fearless, daring.
Sentence: People say that it's extremely brave to go shark diving.
Why: I chose this word because Rat and Raphael were both being very brave by trying to solve the letter and going on a trip to Zapanta's land even though they knew they could get caught.

Travel:
Definition: To make a journey usually of a great length.
Synonyms: Journey, tour, voyage.
Sentence: Some people travel to school and back on the bus if they don't live close.
Why: I chose this word because they traveled quite far by foot and by bus just to solve the letter. Travel sums up a lot of the previous chapters as well with them having to go to the train station and colva prison.

Secret:
Definition: Not known or seen, or not meant to be heard or seen by others.
Synonyms: Unknown, restricted, confidential, classified.
Sentence: Keeping secrets sometimes helps towards not hurting other people's feelings.
Why: I chose this word because they kept their secrets to themselves for a long time. It even meant using Olivia because they needed help but didn't want to share the secret. They kept their secret from the police as well when they could've easily given in after all of pain and fear they had to go through.

Grand:
Definition: Magnificent and imposing in appearance, size, or style.
Synonyms: Magnificent, imposing, impressive, glorious.
Sentence: The grand hotel was covered in gold paint and had many patterns made completely out of concrete.
Why: I chose this word mainly because of what Rat and Raphael saw when they jumped over the fence onto Zapanta's land. His house was very grand. With a dome and spires surrounding it. He had gardens surrounding it and it looked brand new because of all of the workers he would pay to keep it pretty and in good condition.
