This is where chapter 4 of part 1 starts. Gardo and Raphael leave their house to find Rat. This is how I imagine what Raphael saw if he looked back to the houses. A statement from the book that shows this is “We crossed the roadway and were soon deep amongst the trash”

Then after venturing quite far, Gardo and Raphael reach Rat’s hideout beneath old rusting conveyor belts. A statement from the book that shows this is: Soon we came to one of the old belt-machines, but this one was disused and rotting … at ground level, its legs were sunk into concrete piles, and underneath the legs was a hole.”

The friends then climb down the hole to Rat’s hideout. This is what I imagine rat’s hideout looks like as explained in the book. Trash piles, cracked brick walls, huge rats and warm candles. A statement from the book that shows this is “There was a flicker of black, and another rat - this one big as they come - shot right past me over my shoulder … and around him were piles of rubbish that he must have been sorting. The walls and ceiling were damp brick, and there were cracks everywhere.

Gardo then takes over narration. This image is a picture of Eduardo Luis, the actor who played Gardo in the movie Trash (2014). A statement in the book that shows this is “Gardo here, and I take the story on from Raphael.”

Gardo and Raphael then continue the next day “searching” for the wallet. A statement from the book that shows this is “Everyone was way up in the trash - men, women and every damn kid, even the tiny ones.”

Raphael narrates again. A statement in the book that shows this is “Raphael again.”

Raphael, Gardo and Rat head to the tracks hoping to hitch a ride to Central by train. A statement in the book that shows this is “The trains cut through the south side of Behala, very close to the docks. If you want to get to Central, you pick one up ten minutes from my house.

Once they are on the train the group act casual. A statement from the book that shows this is “We swung up and in through the windows - there’s no glass and no bars - and the only people were an old couple at one end, so we spread ourselves over the benches and looked out and waved like we were on holiday.”

The last venue of the story is Central station. This is where Rat had paid the station boys not to follow them and where the group also obtained the parcel from the locker. A statement from the book that shows this is “Minutes later, the train was slowing for the station, and we stood out on the sides. I could see the platform coming up, so I jumped and ended up rolling on the grass.”
